Bachelor Pad

Our brief was to design a self-contained space for a young individual to live independently while still close to the family home. Nestled at the rear of a steeply sloping site, the space captures oceans towards Curl Curl Beach. The simple rectangular building form is punctured with a front and rear verandah, allowing the internal footprint to effortlessly expand into the garden. The floor to ceiling stacking doors maximise passive cross ventilation and the generous verandah overhangs offer relief during the summer months and protection during sourtherly storms.

The bold selection of materials is in strong contrast to a typical ‘granny flat’, with raw burnished concrete floors, tallowood ceilings, charred cladding and dark joinery. Uplighting is used throughout the space to create a gentle glow at night and highlight the natural material finishes. Over the coming years the landscape will develop around the building to help anchor it into the landscape, making it a perfect place for a bachelor to live, work, and enjoy the view.
